Dear Rosemarie, I was so saddened to hear about John’s passing. It was an honor for me to know him as I did. He taught me so much about the business and life. He was an amazing influence on my career, and I will always be grateful to the best boss I ever had. I felt that his ECOLAB family had to be informed so I put a tribute to John on the ECOLAB Alumni Facebook page and have received so many beautiful responses from people he worked with throughout his career with the company. I have also let Al Schuman know. I want to share the wonderful responses I have received with you. I also want you to know that Elena and I would love to have lunch with you in N. Venice when it is convenient for you. John Miele
John Mortensen died Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at home in his sleep. John was 92 years old. John was a legend at ECOLAB.
I first heard about John when I started with the company in 1968. John was a TM in NYC at the time; he had a junior man and his own service man. He handled the steamship business, as it was known back them. He later became a district manager. John was a mechanical genius, extremely innovative. He was the man who built the Raburn Rack business and taught the company how to sell Raburn Racks. I know that John was personally responsible for high sales in Atlantic City when the first 12 casinos opened. John helped everyone; he had a tremendous reputation among his contacts in the NYC. As his contacts matured and moved on, John was their man and ECOLAB was their company. John’s NYC contacts moved on to Atlantic City in the casino business and expanded to Las Vegas and any place else the casino industry went.
ECOLAB realized his talents and John’s unique talents and became the traveling “problem solver;” he traveled the country as the ambassador for ECOLAB, saving our valued customers hundreds of thousands of dollars with energy-saving management studies.
John was a special person, loved and respected by everyone who came in contact with him. He will be missed by all of us who knew him.
There will be a viewing on Monday, August 15 from 4 to 6 pm in Venice, Florida (Farley Funeral Home) with a mass the following day (Tuesday, August 16) at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice at 2 pm. John will be cremated and his ashes will be brought back to NY in the fall for a memorial mass and then returned for burial in Florida.
May He Rest in Peace.

Ken Ackerman I first met John at an East Coast Region meeting when I had only been a TM for a year. He gave a presentation on energy savings at the Hershey Hotel. I was overwhelmed and always wanted to be as good as him, but I was only as good as Ken Thanks for your great attitude and influence John. You are one of my Ecolab heroes RIP
Judy Zhe Thanks John Miele for the comments about John. I had the fortune to work customer service at Beloit Mechanical for many years and enjoyed the daily contact with all the TMs, DMs, etc. Good memories.
Lynette Dempsey Beautiful tribute to a great man. Thank you for posting.
Rich Bieler John was an awesome man and I enjoyed learning and working with him. He was an Ecolab Legend! RIP, God Speed
Mark Peterangelo John Mortensen was a gracious gentleman giant in the eyes of a TM in the early 80's who had the opportunity to do a ride along with him. So giving of his time, vast knowledge, confidence, ongoing friendship and follow-up from that day forward. An original Great EL Man. I Salute & Thank You Mr. Mortensen ... RIP.
Kim Fenimore Certainly one of people I am so proud and fortunate to have known and worked with.
John Skowronek John was a person i was grateful to known the many times we worked together his first goal was to treat the customer fairly. He was a great menter.
Paul Fins I met Johnny over 45 years ago during my initial hiring interview with EL. He was a strong supporter for me being hired over the objections of an area manager. He was my mentor for the 20 years that I worked in NYC and he taught me an awful lot about hotel operations. Rest in Peace, you will be missed.
Richard Spadanuta Honored to have worked with such a gentleman.

Charles Irwin RIP John — One of the Best!!
Robin Biermaier Condolences to all of his family and friend. Beautiful tribute for your friend.
Gary Makin John was God's gift to Ecolab. He had a miraculous way of softening tensions while building alliances. One never left being in his company without feeling enlightened, encouraged, and appreciated. He'll always be a shining star in my EL memories.
Larry Stewart A true old time ecolab hero, just did the job with no fanfare and no politics either.
Ed Joyce A great help to me through out my career. He and Rose Marie were such a great couple. Ecolab and all of us are better for having John in our lives.
Jack Kleckner John was always a true gentleman and a GREAT coworker and asset. He developed the Raburn sales tools and sizing tools and educated whole company on how to sell Raburn. There was not a large Raburn Rack System sale ever made that was not due to John's input and education. Also those of us that knew John well also knew if you ever needed a large account "energy audit" or "kitchen/dish area" flow design recommendations there were only 2 people at Ecolab you could go to, Johnnie M. or Jack Demick. I remember one store where a large Hotel Casino was opening and Johnnie tour the place and told them that their designers were wrong and that their kitchen/dishroom layout and flow would not work. They told him he was wrong that they had sent thousands designing it and millions building it and it was fine. They were open one week and then they spent several $100k knocking down walls and changing things around per Johnnie M's recommendations a free Ecolab service and a customer for life.
Bill Hughes RIP Brother.
Kevin Smith Thanks for sharing the sad news about John Mortensen. He was truly a living legend; helping so many Ecolab associates and customers over his 40+ year career. He was one of a kind!
So fortunate to have John as my trainer when I joined Ecolab in 1988. He taught me and so many so many others about our business, company, and most importantly life.
Many of us can remember a special night when F&B Association of America honored John as Supplier of the Year on 107th floor of World Trade Center North Tower at Windows on the World. It was a proud night for John, Rose Marie and Ecolab. Al Schuman presented John with his EL Service Pin at the event.
John was a role model we all looked up to and wanted to emulate. He was a very special person.
RIP John.,
M
