Obituary of Martin James McGavin
Martin “Marty” James McGavin, age 76, passed away at his Venice, FL home on August 6, 2023. He was born in Endicott, NY on June 30, 1947 to Paul and Winetta McGavin. Marty served in the US Army during the Vietnam War receiving 2 purple hearts. He started his working career as a Pennsylvania State Trooper before directing private security details for high profile individuals. Marty was a member of the American Legion Post 510, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was an avid golfer having played various courses throughout the US. He also spent many years hunting in Northeastern, PA and enjoyed boating in Northern Maine. But what brought Marty the most joy was spending time with family and friends.
Surviving family members include his wife, Marilyn, of Venice, FL; sons Jonathan McGavin (Kerry) of Windemere, FL and Darian McGavin (Peyton) of Victor, ID; brother Tim McGavin (Tracie) of Meshoppen, PA; five grandchildren: Jackson McGavin, Collin McGavin, Hudson McGavin, Owen McGavin and Smith McGavin. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Edward “Ty” Dodge (Dora) of Friendsville, PA, Christopher Dodge (Vera) of Tunkhannock, PA, and David Dodge (Jennifer) of Lee, ME; several nieces and nephews and many cousins who were both family members and close friends.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Mark McGavin, and his brother, Daniel McGavin.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Meshoppen, PA, on October 7, 2023 at 10 am. A memorial gathering will be held on October 7, 2023 at 12 noon at the American Legion Post 154 in Elk Lake, PA. Burial will be at the National Cemetery in Sarasota, FL on October 27, 2023 at 11:00 am. To share a memory of Marty or to send a condolence to the family visit www.farleyfuneralhome.com.
