Obituary of Sylvia Walter
Sylvia Walter, 86, passed away on July 23, 2023, in Venice, FL. She was born on October 18, 1936, in Bistrinci, Yugoslavia to Joseph Gjarmaty and Theresa Vukovich. Sylvia married her husband John Walter in November of 1954. They came to America in 1956 and proudly naturalized as United States Citizens in 1962. Sylvia came to America as a pastry chef and seamstress. Sylvia was a professional seamstress and a talented knitter. She worked for the famous John Wanamaker Department Store in Philadelphia, PA the first department store in the Country. She created custom knits for customers, as well as running a private tailoring business out of her home. She also worked for many years for the Goodnoes Restaurant in Newtown PA in the Bakery and Kitchen. Later, she pioneered getting supermarkets to do “in house baking” to save money and went on to visit various storefronts to train bakers on decorating techniques then ultimately becoming a Bakery Manager for the Shop n Bag stores. Sylvia also had a love for cooking and gardening. She was an expert in canning and spoiled her family and friends with her outstanding culinary delights.
She was a member of various clubs in town, including the San Pedro Prayer Group, North Port Senior Center, and Vice President of the Warm Mineral Springs Community Center. She was a registered Charismatic and volunteer for Meals on Wheels bringing her home cooked meals and spiritual nourishment to the homebound.
She will be remembered as a kind, gentle woman who loved her family and friends dearly.
Sylvia is predeceased by her husband John Walter, daughter Gertrude White, parents Joseph and Theresa Gjarmaty, and brother Slavko Gjarmaty.
She is survived by her children George (Cynthia) Walter, Gretchen (Thomas) Lynch, and John (Lydia) Walter, grandchildren Matthew, Jaclyn (Jolene), Saundia, Daniel (Xan), Quinn, Mary, Angel, Kyli, and Samuel, great grandchild Sunny, and many extended family and friends.
A visitation will be held from 10AM to 12PM on Monday, July 31, 2023, at Farley Funeral Home, 5900 S. Biscayne Drive, North Port, FL 34287. A funeral mass will be held at 10AM on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at San Pedro Catholic Church, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port, FL 34287, with entombment to follow at Venice Memorial Gardens, 1950 Center Rd, Venice, FL 34292.
