Jim first was my boss at Citibank in New York in the mid 1970s; a friendship that lasted 45 years followed even as we both moved around the country (and in Jim's case, London).
As the "shipping expert" in Citibank/Citicorp extensive global shipping business for 15+ years he was a significant figure in developing strategies for investment in the future of both the cruise industry (Disney's in particular) and container ships as they came to dominate, and as they grew in size (initially leading to expanding the Panama Canal (which Jim was a consultant for)).
That said, once Jim was your friend, no one was a better, more loyal friend.
A common interest we shared is what is called back water fishing here in Florida; it is fishing in the mangrove areas of the Everglades and SW Florida for snook, redfish etc. In that we were joined by Larry Gentile (who owned one of Orlando's best seafood restaurants specializing in local fresh fish)
First it was along the southwest edge of the Everglades with Bill Saalman. We would go to Everglades City, stay in Bill's bunkroom and go out to feast on stone crabs the night before (a bit of white wine or scotch too). Then at daybreak off we would go for 40-50 miles to Lostmans Creek. Typically a days catch included snook, redfish, seatrout and, of course, catfish. Then we would come back to Naples and Chef Larry would do his scrumptious thing (Jim and I might have a small libation while we waited).
After Jim moved to Venice, we shifted to fishing the backwaters of Pine Island with Ralph Jones with dinner shifted to Jim/Lisa's home.
The last time I visited Jim in April 2022; he was looking forward to becoming a Grandfather for the first time (as Eva's pregnancy proceeded and we talked by phone, his 6'8" self was having trouble figuring out the barely 5ft Eva had room for a Grubbs baby in that "tiny" body). Nonetheless, in a lot of ways, Asher who was born in time for Jim to close out his live knowing his part of the Grubbs line would continue.
