Uncle Greg had a profound impact on my life - I'd like to share with you how he did.
As a kid growing up in the middle of Kansas, our visits to IL were always something we looked forward to. Our route always took us through a little town called Vandalia, and when we passed there, we knew it was only another 100 miles to Grampa and Grandma Haughts house. One of my first memories of Uncle Greg was he showed up with a big white truck full of tractor tires in the bed. He always had a smile on his face, and carried this positivity that impacted me, even as a kid.
I was a budding guartarist as a 10 year old, and Uncle Greg listened to me play some Spanish tune I'd picked up - I must have played it 10 times over that Christmas visit, but he always seemed willing to listen to it again. At least to me, he had a certain level of patience and chill that I recognized as a young person.
Because of the distance and everyone's busy lives, we didn't get to spend as much time as we would have liked with our cousins growing up. But I remember a time when Uncle Greg and Aunt Joy came to Wichita. I think I was in my mid teen years, barely driving. During the week they stayed with us, I got to hang out with Uncle Greg quite a bit. We played basketball at a park, (he could still palm the ball)! He took me golfing with him, and I'll never forget the very common golfing acronym that I've now heard many times - but he introduced it to me. "Keep It Simple Stupid" or KISS. Actually, its a great reminder in life for those of us who often tend to over-think or over-analyze things.
Uncle Greg helped me purchase my 3rd car - a 1996 Ford Escort with only 16,000 mile on it. I remember flying in to the St. Louis airport, where he met me at the gate. We had lunch, I looked over the car, bought it, and drove back to Wichita. For some reason, I thought of him often when driving that car to well over 100,000 miles.
In years that blur by, it's the small moments, the meaningful conversations, the smiles and laughs, and the love you feel that you carry with you. Uncle Greg never once made me feel condescended to, but always made me feel that he genuinely cared. I venture to say that I'm not the only one who felt that from him.
Helen and I stand with all our precious family and friends who grieve the loss of a truly wonderful individual, and we remember and are thankful to God for all the amazing memories made with Uncle Greg. All of our love.

Although we lived a few states away from our family in Illinois, we were lucky enough to see them every year or so. Uncle Greg had the most contagious laugh. I remember him sitting in an armchair, conversing with family. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome and including them, especially in rousing card games of uno and skip-bo. I never heard him raise his voice to anyone. We are praying for each of our family members who are left behind - for comfort, strength, and grace. We love you all.

Greg took good care of my cars for several years. He secured a Ford Taurus for me. He was always pleasant, honest. Missed him when he became I’ll and no longer worked.

This has been a difficult journey you have been on and I have been praying for both of you. Now I am praying for Joy and the family and will continue to do so. Greg did such a great job maintaining our vehicle as Lou and I were unable. He was a man of honesty and integrity with a joyful spirit in the LORD. With love and prayers, Anne Hartokolis
