Obituary of Joan Marie Thackaberry

Joan Marie Thackaberry, 80, passed away on February 23, 2022, in Sarasota, FL. She was born on March 27, 1941, in New York, NY to John and Frances Macek. Joan graduated from Mary Louis Academy High School in 1958. She then attended Molloy College, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1962. After marrying Michael Thackaberry, the couple lived three years in Spain and traveled extensively in Europe.

Joan later attended Seton Hall University where she graduated in 1981 as a Nurse Practitioner with a specialty in Child School Health. An active member of the Kinnelon, NJ, community, Joan volunteered with the Kinnelon Public Library and the League of Women Voters. Joan relocated to Osprey, FL in 1984, and worked as a school nurse for The Out-of-Door Academy until her retirement in 2004.

Joan was a member of the Military Council of Catholic Women, Florida Association of School Nurses, National Association of School Nurses, Venice Sailing Squadron, St. Petersburg Yacht Club, and the Southbay Yacht and Racquet Club. She enjoyed sailing, photography, raising orchids, cooking, stitchery, and travel.

She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Joan is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Michael Thackaberry, and her parents John and Frances Macek.

She is survived by her son Brian (Jacquelyn) Thackaberry, daughter Brenda (Thomas) Nye, daughter Jennifer (Stephen) Ziegler, 4 grandchildren, brothers John F. Macek and Richard R. Macek, and many friends and family.

There will be a memorial mass held at 10:30AM on Tuesday March 29, 2022, at Epiphany Cathedral Catholic Church, 310 Sarasota St, Venice, FL. A graveside service will follow at 1PM at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, FL.
